Avocado – Yay or Nay?

To sum up the relationship of humans with this uninteresting looking food, only one phrase comes in to the mind- “It is Guac-word.” To start off, many people are confused if avocado is supposed to be a fruit or a nut. During first impressions, it gives off distinctively nutty vibes, but once you open it, you can say that it resembles a fruit.

“Hey Google”

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the ‘fruit’ avocado. Avocado is constantly on the rise in terms of popularity amongst people. Once not even considered worth eating by many people, now avocado is on the verge of becoming a sensation amongst the health enthusiasts.

Even if we consider that, there is a large chunk of population which absolutely hates avocados. People straight up don’t like the mushy, rich and mellow flavour and the thick, buttery texture. It is often considered to resemble the taste of over-ripe Jamun (black plum). One more problem with avocados is that I’ve literally not met a single person who can accurately predict if the avocado has ripened or not. I’ve personally seen avocados which are green in colour but are overripe and I’ve also seen avocados which have blackened up completely but are perfectly ripe inside. The phrase “You can’t judge a book by its cover” feels like is tailor-made for avocados.

I think this unconventional and difficult-to-predict nature of avocados makes them remarkably interesting. The joy of finding a perfectly ripe avocado is equivalent to getting perfect scores in tests if not equivalent to finding gold at the bottom of the river.

The health benefits of avocado are immense. According to NDTV Foods,

Avocados are one of the most nutritious fruits known to mankind. In fact, its high nutritive profile has also earned the fruit the title of The Olive Oil Of America“.

Avocado is not just a powerhouse when it comes to health benefits, avocado makes some amazingly delicious dishes. It goes without explaining Guacamole is an all time favourite throughout the world due to its hummus like texture and refreshing yet rich taste. Avocado on toast is another delicious breakfast item which is becoming a sensation nowadays. The Fats in the avocado cut right through the carbs of the bread making it a marriage made in heaven.

My love story with Avocado started when I first savoured an unusual sounding Avocado Ice Cream in an Ice Cream Parlour in Pune. They claimed the ice cream to be made of natural Avocados procured specially from New Zealand. As fancy as it may sound, the ice cream did not disappoint. The creamy texture perfectly matched the crunch of a waffle cone, almost giving me Avocado on Toast vibes, but with sweet and cold notes. The ice cream perfectly complimented the summer heat of May. It was as delicious as it was quirky.

You either like avocado or you perpetually hate it, there are no two ways about it. No matter what your opinion is, it is equally true that avocado is interestingly unconventional. It will never be considered boring and mainstream. If you like unconventional, avocado might be for you. Go give it a try!
